New IBM 2216 Router
First generation IBM 2216 Multiaccess Connector. The IBM 2216 8-slot Multiaccess Connector is a direct replacement to IBM 3172 Interconnect Controller and IBM 3745 Front End Processor applications. Choose 370 channel interfaces or Escon interfaces for uplink communication to the mainframe. Choose downlink communication to LAN and WAN connectivity options, such as Token Ring, FDDI, Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, ATM, V.24, V.35 and ISDN communications. The base unit ships standard with a 133Mhz processor and is upgradeable to a 233Mhz processor.

· Branch-office concentrator - regional collection point of remote offices via 2210's, 3174's, 6611's. Concentrates the traffic and sends it to home office.
· SNA backbone replacement for a remote 37x5 front-end processor - Concentrates downstream SDLC lines with increased connectivity options such as HSSI, ISDN, PRI and ATM.
· Access point for a high-speed multiprotocol campus backbone - solution for wide area connectivity into the campus backbone using ATM, fast ethernet or FDDI
· S/390 Channel Gateway - 2216 has ESCON connectivity to the S/390 allowing it to be the gateway to ATM, Token Ring, FDDI backbones. Ideal replacement for the IBM 3172 Interconnect Controller, sometimes increasing channel throughput by two or three times.
