New IBM 5500 Express IP Control Unit

New IBM 5500 Express IP Control unit connects twinax devices to either local or remote AS/400 systems and the internet.  Each model of the new IBM 5500 Control Unit has a twinaxial workstation controller capable of supporting 8 to 56 twinax devices, a hard file supporting the Network Station boot code, two RS232 WAN ports and connectivity to Token Ring or 10/100 Ethernet LANs.  The new IBM 5500 Express IP Control Unit Complements the IBM 5494 Remote Control Unit but does not replace its function.  The new IBM 5500 and the IBM 5494 are similar in that they both provide twinax connectivity for remote AS/400 hosts.  However, the new IBM 5500 Express Control Unit support twinax devices that us the TCP/IP Over Twinax protocol.  Therefore, the new IBM 5500 is ideal for applications requiring both the IBM legacy twinax terminals, twinax printers and 5250 Emulation adapters as well as twinax Network Stations using TCP/IP over Twinax.  

There are four models of the new IBM 5500 Express IP Control Unit.  As mentioned above, all units support 56 twinax devices.  The difference between each new IBM 5500 model is based on the following different LAN adapter configurations.  The new IBM 5500-01E has one 10/100 Mbps Ethernet adapter, the new IBM 5500-02E has two 10/100 Mbps Ethernet adapter, the new IBM 5500-01T has one 16/4 Mbps Token Ring adapter and the new IBM 5500-02T has two 16/4 Mbps Token Ring adapters.

Hardware Requirements

5500 Express IP Control Unit Requirements for WAN Connection(s):

• External asynchronous Hayes compatible modem such as the IBM 7852-400 or the 3Com/U.S. Robotics 56K External
• External ISDN modem such as the 3Com/U.S. Robotics Courier I-Modem ISDN with V.Everything

AS/400 Requirements:

• 5500 to AS/400 WAN connection:
  • WAN port capable of Asynchronous Communications including:
    • FC 2609, 2612, and 6152 can use a SLIP connection
    • FC 2699, 2720, 2721, 9699, 9270 and 9721 can use a SLIP or PPP connection (PPP requires OS/400 V4R2 or later)
  • External asynchronous Hayes compatible modem such as the IBM 7852-400 or the 3Com/U.S. Robotics 56K External
  • External ISDN modem such as the 3Com/U.S. Robotics Courier I-Modem ISDN with V.Everything
• 5500 to AS/400 LAN connection:
  • 4/16 Mbps Token-Ring feature for Token-Ring connection
  • 10 Mbps Ethernet or 10/100 Ethernet feature for Ethernet connection

Twinax-attached PC Requirements:

• IBM 5250 Express Adapter or IBM 5250 Enhanced Emulation Adapter

Software Requirements

Host AS/400 Requirement:

• OS/400 V3R2 or later
• Requirement for WAN connection between 5500 and AS/400
  • SLIP or PPP connection enabled (dependent on AS/400 type and OS/400 version)

Twinax-attached PC Client:

• IBM 5250 Express TCP/IP Driver 1.27 or higher
• One of the following PC operating systems:
  • Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 or later with Service Pack 3
  • Microsoft Windows 95 with Service Pack 1
  • Microsoft Windows 98

Network Station Support:

• A Network Station Manager V3.0 server must be accessible to the 5500 over a WAN or LAN connection to support full Network Station functionality.
  • If a NSM V3.0 is not available in the network, the Network Stations attached to the 5500 will still function, but will be limited to using the Web Browser, TN5250 and TN3270 clients included in the 5500 Express IP Control Unit.
