Used IBM 8300 Video Access Node
Refurbished IBM 8300 Video Access Node
Today's Video Conferencing Technology Limits.
Group video conferencing is defined by H.320-based equipment, which is limited by the quality of its compression and the bandwidth of ISDN. While Motion-JPEG offers higher quality, it requires DS-3 rate connections that are prohibitively expensive except for short distances.
Networking Options for Video Conferencing
Video conferencing solutions depend on continuously available, high-bandwidth local and wide area networks. Video data requires dedicated bandwidth; therefore, networking technologies that can allocate bandwidth to connections are more suitable for video conferencing applications.
However, there are video conferencing applications such as CU-SeeMe that transmit data over the MBONE multi-cast service on the Internet. The quality of such offerings is low and inconsistent due to the lack of reserved bandwidth on the network.
The networking options that do provide the appropriate capabilities are:
ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network)
The most prevalent network option today is ISDN. The H.320 standard specifies ISDN rates of 64 to 1920 Kbit/sec. Since ISDN offers dedicated bandwidth, the only limitations of H.320 over ISDN are the cost of bandwidth and the upper limit of ISDN.
DS-1/DS-3 (a.k.a T1/T3)
Dedicated circuit-switched lines at rates for 1.5 to 45 Mbit/sec have been used for M-JPEG based video conferencing. Most educational video conferencing networks, such as the North Carolina Research and Educational Network (NC-REN) and Iowa Communications Network (ICN), are based on dedicated DS-3 lines.
ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode)
ATM may replace ISDN and circuit switched lines as the network of choice due to its flexibility of connections, bandwidth options, high bandwidth, and low cost. ATM can mix reserved and non-reserved bandwidth connections. ATM networks are being deployed for local and wide area connectivity. Since ATM can offer bandwidth ranging from a few kilobits/sec to OC-3 (155 Mbit/sec) and higher, the same ATM network can carry low-quality video as well as higher quality based on the same H.310.
IBM offers two video over ATM technology solutions:
High-quality desktop video (H.320 and MPEG-1 over ATM and ISDN)
Desktop video conferencing products are available through the IBM partnership with First Virtual. The First Virtual products allow IBM customers to:
Conduct a point-to-point video conference over ATM and ISDN at H.320 quality
Receive MPEG-1 video from the First Virtual video server
Share applications over one common network with no degradation in video quality
Programmable broadcast-quality video (H.310 and MPEG-2 over ATM)
The used IBM 8300 Video Access Node enables real-time interactive delivery of broadcast-quality video. The Video Access Node will allow:
The used IBM 8300 Model 300 has 32 MB RAM, a minimum hard drive of 2 GB (5400 rpm) and a maximum of 4 GB (7200 rpm), and a 200 MHz Pentium processor.
