Customers requiring a solution driven by integration of voice, video and data built upon a guaranteed quality of service with emphasis on optimizing the utilization of the bandwidth should choose the new 2220.

Customers who are building a frame relay only network, be it a private or public provided service, should consider the 2219 and 2225. If very high low speed port density is required, the 2220 can also be considered.

Customers who see the requirement for a high speed ATM core backbone whose primary objective is switching inbound and outbound ATM traffic should be looking at the new 2230.

In the ATM transport decision:

The 2220 provides multi-service connections ATM, frame relay, HDLC, CES, voice and X.25. It uses Network BroadBand Services (NBBS) to guarantee quality of service and to optimize the efficiency of the bandwidth. Both Packet Transfer Mode (variable length packets) and ATM cells are supported over the trunks. The new 2220 is the best integrated voice solution with the integration of compression, silence suppression, idle removal and fax detect capability. Trunking capability ranges from 56Kbps through OC3. The 2220 also supports low speed connectivity, starting at 2.4Kbps, with a high density of ports per adapter.

The 2230 provides an optimized ATM only switch. External services are needed to convert information (voice, video) into ATM cells for connection to the 2230. The new 2230 provides trunking at T3 or OC3 speeds and does support ATM bearer service connections.

In the Frame Relay transport decision:

The new 2219 (a frame relay only platform) and the new 2225 (supports Frame Relay SMDS, ATM interworking, and ISDN access connections) provide premier frame relay service and a migration path to wide area ATM connectivity. Both platforms include protocol translation functions based on RFC 1490 that permit connection of Point to Point Protocol to frame relay end points. RFC 1490 encapsulation of X.25, HDLC and SNA uses the high speed frame relay backbone for transport. An Internode Switching capability enables to interconnect the switches across public frame relay networks. High port densities with speeds ranging from 2.4KbPS through T1/E1 are available on the 2219. Both products are managed by the Nways Wide Area Element Manager for HP OpenView.

The new 2225 additionally includes Network and Service Interworking capabilities which allow interconnection of frame relay, ATM and SMDS networks, including the ability to transit across bearer service networks. Of particular interest is the ability to connect frame relay devices to ATM based campus resources. The 2225 can also be used to accept ISDN dial in access for attachment to connected frame relay end points. The 2225 connection speed ranges from 9.6Kbps through T3/E3 (45Mbps).

The 2220 also provides solid frame relay support highlighted by sharing the NBBS based backbone for integrating voice and video as well as data. Trunk speeds range from 56Kbps through T1 and OC3, with access speeds ranging from 2.4Kbps through T3 (45Mbps). The 2220 has a higher density of low speed lines, does facilitate direct attachment of non-frame relay media such as CES, voice, X.25 and ATM, and includes an integrated voice server function.
