IBM 2029 Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexer (DVDM)

The IBM 2029 is a high-speed, high-capacity, scalable fiber-optic data transport that uses dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM) technology.  The IBM 2029 has per-wavelength management and passive optical passthrough.  The IBM 2029 system can have one to eight pairs of shelves at multiple sites configured in a hubbed-ring or point-to-point topology.

A fully loaded IBM 2029 system (8 IBM 2029 shelves per side or 16 IBM 2029 shelves total) can transport up to 32 high availability channels (wavelengths) over one pair of optical fibers, or 64 base channels (wavelentgths) of any support protocol.  When the IBM 2029 uses the sub-rate multiplexor feature (SRM, also know as 4TDM), this can be extended to support 256 base or 128 high availability channels for multimode ESCON, multimode or singlemode OC-3 (ATM-155), multimode or singlemode Fast Ethernet protocols.  Each channel can operate up to a maximum data rate of 1.25 Gbps.  This allow a total transport capacity on the IBM 2029 of 40 Gbps over each pair of optical fibers.

The IBM 2029 multiplexes on Fiber Optic Connections.  Multiplexing is the process of simultaneously transmitting multiple signals over the same physical connection.

The IBM 2029 is capable of doing the following types of multiplexing of fiber-optic connections:

• Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) - TDM encodes information, converts it to a common transmission speed, then transmits it over a single physical connection.
• Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) - With cross band WDM, information is multiplexed and sent onto the physical connection over one of two wavelengths (1310 nm or 1550 nm). One fiber can support simultaneous transmissions at both wavelength bands.
• Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) - With DWDM, information is multiplexed over individual wavelengths (called optical channels). The IBM 2029 uses DWDM technology.

The card cage is the largest area of the IBM 2029 shelf. The IBM 2029 card cage covers 20 slots that hold circuit cards. The IBM 2029 circuit cards have the following names:

• Optical Channel Interface (OCI) card
• Optical Channel laser and detector (OCLD) card
• Optical Channel Manager (OCM0 card
• Shelf Processor (SP) card

The IBM 2029 offers multiprotocol support, including ESCON, FICON, Sysplex Timer, HiPerlinks, OC-3, OC-12, FDDI, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet and Fiber Channel.
